Sorry if this report isn’t as detailed as usual, I don’t often get to training and have a shocking memory – if someone else who was there could fill in the blanks, that’d be great.
Anyway, training took place at 10am this morning at a rather warm Windy Hill for around an hour and a half. Present of the Blitzers (sorry if I missed any of you, I didn’t get to meet you all) were Koala, Josh’s Mum, danstar (??), AN#10 (I think) and the usual training reporters. Again, sorry I don’t know all of you.
Players absent – McPhee (honeymoon), and Daniher (might just not have spotted him).
In the modified group were Hocking, Johns, Hooker (who jogged laps before joining the others on the modified group), a smallish lad wearing the #40 (John Wiliams?), Winderlich, Neagle and probably others I have missed. They worked on handballing with Campo before doing a light kicking drill for most of the session, focusing on passing and long kicking.
The main group first moved off into a drill which involved quick handballing to a loose man, first with no pressure then with a defender snapping at their heels. Of particular note was Lovett’s evasion skills (which to me have improved), as has Lloyd’s. Hate to be critical (or racist!), but Atkinson’s skills below his knees look sub-par and his disposal is rather average.
The players then moved off into a gameplay simulation drill, which looked a lot like the drill many junior footballers do called ‘kamikaze’, where a player kicks diagonally to a team mate and then runs to the back of that line. I was impressed by the efforts of Chartres and Andy Lee amongst others, both of whom have looked to have improved (and Lee also seemed a lot more vocal during training). If Chartres continues, we could be seeing him in the seniors sometime this reason.
The players then finished with some goalkicking practice, where one of the Blitzers present remarked at the fact that Laycock usually practices from long range. Anyway, Monfries’ goalkicking – though usually reliable – is looking good at this early stage of the season.
Only injury concern that flared up was David Myers, who looked good before going off early with what looked to me as a thigh/upper leg complaint. Didn’t seem like it was overly serious, though. Ryder, Watson, Houli and a couple of others (Stanton I think) left the track early for reasons unknown to me, but they looked to be moving fine.
