Round 8 - Brisbane Match Preview

THE Michael-Cupido-Caracella Cup!

FACT: Sheedy is Lethal’s bitch. Plain and simple every side Lethal has coached against Sheedy has had some either mental or game plan advantage over the Bombers. Is it game plan, strategy or just the forces of the wind against Big Kev when facing off against Lethal Leigh Matthews.

FACT: Leigh Matthews sides play with a no-nonsense brand of football, direct, skilful and a willingness to play contested football.

FACT: Sheedy may preach and exciting brand of football, and yes we are capable of this and have shown we can do it, but he has a tendency to get defensive, and reactive which is in stark contrast to the Sheedy of 1981-2000. Too often Sheedy pushes back and relies too heavily on the “champions” to do the jobs each week… Has Sheedy lost his instincts or willingness to take risks with the younger players?

FACT: Sheedy will be out coached by Lethal come the siren on Saturday around 4:30pm.

Key Match Ups

Scott Lucas vs Orange Ruffy v2 – Lucas will be looking for another hot game, and unfortunately he won’t have The Messiah there to lead into someone else’s space, cut off their leads and just be a real un-team player. I actually think Lucas will struggle this week, because Merrett has been a revelation down back for the Lions and his pace and strength will be something Lucas may not cope with.

Patrick Ryder vs Jamie Charman – Charman has been spending alot of time down back and to counter his around the forward 50 ruck work Ryder will get the job because he is also more mobile and can run off Charman and be very damaging up through the ground. Charman can cause some headaches as he is a fierce competitor and could push Ryder to man up, Paddy just needs to trust his instincts.

Dustin Fletcher vs Jonathon “Brown Dog” Brown – Will Sheedy play Fletcher on him? Do you know what he probably won’t and will stick Mal or McPhee on him. If he does this Brown will have a field day and look for him to kick 6-8 goals… I have never EVER seen Fletcher play on Brown

The X Factor

Kevin Sheedy getting that mongrel and that Hunter mentality which was the trademark of the Back Pocket plumber from the 80’s and 90’s. Will all the criticism fire him up or will he coach and position to try and save his job instead of trying to win a game with aggressive direct innovative football.

Brisbane already play this way and tackle hard, can we match it or will we fold like a bad hand?

Jason Winderlich’s run through the middle will be crucial as will McVeigh’s job on either Black/Power, we need to shit down 1 of them to restrict the flow… my choice would be Power as he has a knack of working across the front of the centre square and penetrating small kicks/lobs to leading forwards when you least expect it.

The Y Factor

Some players really need to take it up a notch, the like of Lovett, M.Johnson, McPhee, Monfries really need to step it up because their usage of the ball has been rather wasteful and poor. In fact much of the side need to stop being selfish (Yessss Scotty and Lloydy) and start standing up… Lloyd and Lucas need to play tall, play strong and stop diving, whinging, pissing and moaning when something doesn’t go their way.

“If your going to pull on the Red and Black jumper, do it proud and commit to the legacy all those who have bleed and sacrificed before you. If your NOT willing to pay the price that comes with wearing the jumper… LEAVE NOW!!!
