Yep tad harsh. Its not going to be the same without Cuz playing. I am really missing watching him play for the Weagles, I don’t care what anyone says about his ego, smugness, arrogance I think he is a star and one of the all time great players in this competition and he would be one of the first picked in my side any day of the week. Get well Ben, hope to see you back on the park very very soon!
So lets roll into the game.
Off the back of last weeks nail biter against the Sydney Sooks, we have backed up for 3 wins in a row. Something I don’t think we have done since 2002-2003. We are 6-4 and sitting in 6th place on the ladder and now we come into a 4 weeks stretch which can really set up the rest of the season or can also put a nail on final’s chances for 2007. The first hurdle is from the reining premiers West Coast Eagles at the Phone Dome.
West Coast are missing a few from their Premiership side in Cousins, Embley and Fletcher but they seemed to have taken it to another level and another notch because the Q-Man is have a shocker compared to last year yet West Coast are firing and not yet on all cylinders…. SCARY!!!!!!
Into the side this week is The Sex Machine (Pev) and WorkCover (Campo) and out goes Hooley Dooley and Monster Nash.
The upside is that our forwards still struggled again to get on top of the game and yet we still got over the line through excellent drive from our backline and midfield. And they really need to be on top of their game if we are to even come close to matching it with West Coast.
Key Match Ups
McVeigh vs. Judd – Last year Spike got the job on Judd and did a wonderful job and I could see no reason why he wouldn’t get the job again and especially with his form as he could be very damaging the other way especially when Judd runs across half back which he does 4-5 times a quarter.
Lloyd vs. Hunter – As Velvet will play up the ground more look for Hunter to take him and you can bet Worsfold will instruct Hunter to run up the ground to their forward line to take Lloyd with him and hopefully wear him down as Hunter has a bigger engine than Lloyd and can also be very damaging up forward. This will be a real test for our Captains judgement, our coaching panels moves and also our defences reading of the play to allow Lloyd to stay on our forward half.
Hille vs. Cox – Hille is starting to find some of that end of 06’ form which had him showing why he is going to be a premier ruckman in this competition, but he will have his work cut out against the AA/Premiership ruckman in Cox who is as mobile as Hille and can also kick a goal. This will be pivotal as we need to break even to give our midfield half a chance of shutting down their engine room.
Welsh vs. Kerr – Now this matchup might not happen, but I think it’s one which should. You don’t need pace to go up against Kerr, you just need to play close and tight and tackle hard at stoppages ala Cam Ling. Welsh tackles hard and also he can wear Kerr down physically and mentally. If we shut down Kerr it goes a long way to stopping much of their run!!! Come on Sheeds play Woosha on Kerr!!!!
The X Factor
Patrick Ryder. The Ryder on the Storm will be a key ingredient to this game as he will be able to push into the Ruck, Forward or roam across half back. We need a big game from Paddy and I think he is just about due to have one of those “MONSTER” games we will come to expect from him over the next 10 years. Also keep an eye out on Jobe, his ground work and ability to be left alone will be key to creating chances and damaging going forward.
Look for Johns to be a late inclusion for Lucas, word on the street is Scotty’s tugged a groin…. Maybe the Messiah can SMASH GLASS again like he did in his breakout game in 06’
The Y Factor
Sheedy persists with an unfit and average playing Jason Laycock, against West Coast I have visions of him spending allot of time on the pine as Seaby will give him a workover when Cox rests. Campo?? Why? I would have thought Heffernan would have been the perfect spoil for the West Coast Engine Room, as Heff can tag and get possessions and I would be more trusting of his form right now than Campo…. guess we will have to wait and see. If your reading this Campo you better not F*** up because I am ready with both barrels fully loaded to unleash on your Carlton ass as I have run out of defensive arguments for you.
So I am looking forward to the game, will grab the daughter after my day trip to Warrnambool, cruise into the city to my watering hole (which is actually a restaurant of whom I know the owners well) on Collins Street for a few brews and then mosey on to the game.
Come of you F*%$# Red and Black Dons, Gimme Something, Lift, Gimme Everything You’ve got, You gotta inspire me
