Old cold day in this outer
Take a sip from my $12 coffee
Surrounded by the ferals
And their empty can’s of bourbon
I can’t wait for the first bounce
Then they will jump back in their seat
As Lloydy cleans up Wakelin
Ryder shuts down Cloke
The place goes deafly silent
Not a word is to be spoke…
It’s Friday, I am pretty fried from the weeks activities also I am still pretty tired as sleep has been a luxury item at the moment.
I wont be at the game but I will be glued to the radio to hear Rexy sing “I fought the Lloyd, but the Lloyd won”
If there was ever a game that would define careers, this is it. Anzac Day was big but in scheme of future endeavors this game is like a Grand Final.
A disastrous loss could spell the end of Kevin Sheedy and his reign at Windy Hill, we cannot use injuries as an excuse as Collingwood are missing their Top 2 players, and have so for most of the year.
It could also spell the death knell of the aspirations of this team to make it to September action because our run over the next 5 weeks will be against some form sides..
If it’s not next week, but the board is to bring up Sheedy in the next 4 weeks will be the Giant Waving the Sword… will it be for Sheedy to fall upon…. or for Sheedy to cut the ribbon to open up another 2 year era of Martiandom?
With Fletcher and McVeigh back into the side it will go a long way to helping the Sheedy cause. Also for Jason Johnson to be dropped is the first time I feel he and the match committee are admitting that his 2nd, 3rd and 4th efforts and heart are not enough to get him a game…. you just cannot turn the ball over in pressure situations like he did and still does….Mark Johnson buddy your not far behind…lift son because your in the cross hairs!!!!!
As I said last week there are some players that need to lift if we are to win, and the Johnson’s were 2 of them one of the others was Adam McFumbles. He is having a mare of a time this year… he seems fit I just do not understand what is going on with him. He should be our catapult off the half back line, the run and drive but he is more of a hindrance because every time he marks the ball he stops/props to make a decision on what to do???? Run McPhee Runnnnnnn
Maybe it’s not his fault, maybe it is our teams lack or unwillingness to do some hard running. Just watch tapes from Brisbane in their heyday… they were never a fast running side, but they were a bunch of hard runners and by that I mean when ever they had the ball their players midfielders, wingers and even half back flankers would run hard up the ground in front of the ball carrier to create space… Brisbane moved the ball quickly because they created waves of players with space, plenty of options and thus the ball carrier was free to keep running because at anytime he was presented with a would be tackler the ball carrier had options either inside, or outside…
Take a look at Hawthorn, you cannot pinpoint 1 ultra quick running, but they all run hard and run hard to space and create multiple options for their ball carrier so he can dispose of the ball with least pressure and without having to stop/prop and slow down the ball movement and allow the defence to flood back into their forward line.
This is our major problem, when we start chipping and sideways hacking across the centre square and our forward 50 this allows the defence to clog up Lucas, Lloyds and the others space… and with the disposal and decision making of some of our players this is not what you need with chip chip around forward 50.
How many times in the last 2 weeks have we coughed the ball up across the 50m arc because of stop start footy (on our part) and the ball has gone the other way for a goal…. the Geelong game…. I ran out of fingers and it was too cold at the Dome to take off my shoes to count with my toes…..
It’s not just about speed, it’s not just about long and direct…. it’s about the running capacity and willingness for players like the Johnson’s, McPhee, Stanton, Dyson, Peverill to keep running well after they have disposed of the ball…
Is it any coincidence that since Winderlich is out of the side much of our run seems to have dried up…. Winders is the example of the type of midfielder we need more of…. hard runners…. don’t have to be ultra quick (it helps) but to just gut run like a Cousins, Eagleton and the like is what we don’t have….
I implore you all to watch the game closely and you will see that once players dispose of the ball or the play has gone past them they stop running and start waddling, jog around a little or basically stop moving….. and when we get ourselves into a jam in our half where are they to help by providing some hard running off their man to create an option or some space for us to kick to??????
Sheedy’s career rests on the effort our guys will put in against Collingwood.. will they give it everything and more or will they just do what they normally do week in and week out…..
I am sick to death of weak efforts from a core part of this club, lift or leave
