Essendon have been fined $5,000 by the AFL after captain Matthew Lloyd approached the umpires at the quarter-time break of Sunday’s AFL Round 7 clash with Port Adelaide.
Essendon players and their coach Matthew Knights were unhappy with the umpires’ interpretation of the holding the ball rule.
Under AFL Regulation 16.3, players are not permitted to approach the umpires at any quarter break, or when the umpires are entering or leaving the ground.
The fine was imposed by AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson.
