Shocking game in shocking conditions. 5 goal wind blowing to one end in the 1st half, moderated a tiny bit in the second half. The Bendigo skills were always going to fall down under adverse conditions, and so it proved. remarkably within striking distance at 3/4 time, but were horrible in the last quarter.
Hocking did not play.
Hislop was good. snapped a very nice goal in the second quarter, had some physicality around the contests and even broke the lines a few times. disposal wasn’t too bad usually, but did struggle to find an option (sometimes coz there wasn’t one!) occassionally. the report was a farce. a casey player was run down after running 6 metres and didn’t dispose of the footy. umpire calls play on. Tommy yells “farking hell, umpire, thats shit”. umpire blows whistle: “against you 35, you cant abuse me. against 35”. i didn’t even realise you could be reported for that?
Hooker: no impact. took a few marks but had to wander miles upfield to find the footy. conditions not in his favour.
Williams: hot and cold. still needs to work harder defensively. work in progress.
Magin: quieter than the last few times i’ve seen him. run off the bench more often. struggled with the bouncing ball to pick it up. a couple of very nice handballs out of traffic though.
Johns: played back into the wind, went forward with it. not too bad in either role. tends to throw the ball onto the boot without looking too often. kicked a couple, some good marks, put the ball out on the full three times into the wind during the third.
Mal: does what he has to do, but the spark seems gone imo. a class above this level – actually, about three classes. the small number of listed players currently available for bendigo must be disheartening.
Bellchambers: good in the ruck contests but struggled around the ground. “nearly” took quite a few marks, but they just didn’t stick. not his conditions obviously. still hugely promising.
Dick: non-event. one scorching run into the wind, not much else.
Cramieri: impressed with this kid. good hands, pretty hard at it, good overhead. i hope he kicks on, and the real shining light from the bendigo list.
