Star Trio Sign New Deals

Essendon have signed three big names to new contracts with Jobe Watson signing a two year deal, while veterans Dustin Fletcher and Scott Lucas have signed new one year deals.

Fletcher is expected to retire after the 2009 AFL Season, while Lucas was rumoured to have been wanting a two year deal, but the club would not offer any more than a one year deal.

“The rationale behind the one-year deal is that it gives some flexibility to both the player and the club because, at that stage of a career, the player wants to be happy with where they are at with their footy and the club wants to be happy with where they are at.” Essendon COO Travis Auld said. “It’s becoming common practice nowadays with AFL clubs that as players come to the latter part of their career they go on one-year deals and they might end up having two or three seasons of one-year deals and Scott understands that.”
