I arrived from Hong Kong on Thursday night) first time back during the footy season for 6 years ) and decided to attend training with my wife in tow.
The weather was fine but crisp with a breeze springing up halfway through the session
Training was for 110 minutes which is quite a lengthy session.
Various drills were performed.
- stretching for the first 10 minutes – agility exercise where players had to step AROUND poles – short passing exercise from 20 to 30 minutes – one two handballs with a player in between – mark and quick handball drill – picking up a rolling ball from the ground – kick in practice with an emphasis on moving the ball up the guts – 3/4 field simulated match drill with an emphasis on winning the contested ball and moving the ball quickly
Modified Group
lee
davey
gumbleton
dempsey
johnston
Lee was doing sprintwork before the session and otherwise kicked and handballed with the rest of the group. I assume lee could be 3 weeks away
Davey was kicking with his left foot so I assume the ACL was done on his right knee
Gumbleton was moving gingerly and was obviously affected by his broken collarbone. I assume that he would be 4 or 5 weeks away.
Dempsey. Kicked and handballed only. I couldnt guess what his status is.
Johnston – spent about 10 minutes kicking with his left foot. I chatted briefly with JJ who expressed frustration with his injury and seems to be a few weeks away.
Neagle and Myers didnt train and spent part of their time in the swimming pool.
Stanton and McPhee trained for about 2/3 of the session.
I didnt see Bachar Houli but I may have missed him.
General Observations
The skill level during the session was above average and there was ‘ lots of voice ‘ during training.
I thought that Rama and Reimers were particularly crisp with their skills.
IMO Reimers has the skills to be an elite player if he can harness other parts of his game.
Thanks to my wife Jenny who identified many of the players on my behalf.
Obviously watching football on TV every weekend in Hong Kong has developed ed her knowledge of australian footy.
