Wednesday Tidbits

Rama’s return imminent?

Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said on Wednesday that Adam Ramanauskas would play at AFL level during 2007.

Having overcome two bouts of cancer and a knee re-construction in the past four years, Ramanauskas had 32 possessions playing for the Bendigo Bombers in the VFL last Monday.

“I think Ramanauskas will play senior footy this year,” Sheedy said. “But the most important thing is play him when he is right and don’t play him because everyone thinks you should.”

“He played his best game on Monday, he had a very good game but he is still a little bit away from it,” Sheedy added. “I think he is enjoying himself and he is quite happy within himself, which is pretty pleasing when you have had cancer and you are
overcoming cancer.”

Wednesday Training Update

Cold and windy conditions at the Hill today and training was a little shorter but still sharp. Everyone was accounted for but there where a few missing from the track …

Injury Update

Midfielder Brent Stanton remains in serious doubt for the Bombers trip to Adelaide this weekend after suffering an ankle injury against the Weagles last Friday night.

Stanton failed to train at Windy Hill on Wednesday despite being cleared of serious damage to his injured ankle.

Defender Nathan Lovett-Murray is set to make his return to football in the VFL this weekend after being sidelined for much of the season so far with a groin strain, while he looks set to be joined by top draft pick Scott Gumbleton as he plays his first game
in a month after a hamstring injury.

Hird confirms 2007 is the end

Despite being in All-Australian form, ex-skipper James Hird once again confirmed at the weekend that 2007 would be his final season.

“It’s set in stone,” Hird said. “I’ve made up my mind and I know what I want to do. I want to finish off this year in the best possible way I can and then give it away.”

Speculation has been mounting that Hird would be asked to carry on in 2008, after a public plea from skipper Matthew Lloyd last week.

“This is it and that’s why I suppose you can enjoy it. We’ve got 11 home-and-away games and we’ll see what happens after that, but just play them as hard as you can and hang up the boots,” Hird added. “But, at 34, your body is telling you something and I don’t think I could go on another year,”
