hi, apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere but what are the actual concessions the gold coast gets?
i know they get access to 17 year olds. do the 17 year olds have any say in whether they go to the gold coast. can gc say they want player x and player x has the option of saying no thankyou and heading into the national draft or are they forced to go to the gc? |

GC have access to up to 12 17 year olds that would have been eligible for this years draft, but aren't any more due to age eligibility changes. So that's 12 17 year olds who were born from Jan 92 to April 92. Note that a lot of the real gun 17 year olds don't seem to fit into this bracket, thankfully (Matera is one, but I think he's already knocked them back). The GC can offer these kids a contract at any time, no draft involved. The kids can then either accept the contract and become a GC player, or they can reject it and go into the 2010 draft as usual. Kid's choice.
In the 2010 draft, the GC have picks 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 in the first round, and then the first pick in every subsequent round. The GC have the first 4 selections in the 2009 rookie draft. The GC can sign up to one uncontracted player from each club. This requires the players' agreement, but the club has no say. Any club that loses a player in this way will be compensated a single draft pick to be used in any of the subsequent 5 drafts - the exact pick is determined by the AFL according to a secret formula but will never be better than a pick at the end of the first round. GC have a bigger salary cap and list size than the other clubs for the first few yearsP: 2011 48 senior list, nine rookies with $1m TPP extra allowance; 2012 46 senior list, nine rookies with $800k TPP extra allowance; 2013 42 senior list, nine rookies with $600k TPP extra allowance; 2014 40 senior list, nine rookies with $400k TPP extra allowance; 2015 38 senior list, nine rookies in line with other AFL clubs. There's also a few extra bits and pieces - zone picks, PSD access in 2010, Qld rookies, etc, etc. But that's enough to be going on with. |

HM, you are an absolute guru on this topic.
Do you know if they have to pay a certain amount of the salary cap? I think at the moment that 92.5% (?) has to be paid by all clubs due to the agreement with the players association etc. If you add 1mill to the standard salary cap figure of ??? you get a massive figure. I guess my point is, how could they ever manage to fill up that cap space? If you assume that most of the first rounders will be kept then who gets the rest? Scary time for list managers trying to find a way to get their players under contract. Of course, all the player managers will be angling towards their players being uncontracted for at the least leverage in their negotiations. Or worse still, off they go to a fantastic location in GC, set up financially for life, and all the clubs get at best is a second rounder. I know that the concessions had to be generous but they look as though they are starting a dynasty if the draft pool happens to be strong. |

QUOTE(beerme @ Jul 3 2009, 02:22 PM) I guess my point is, how could they ever manage to fill up that cap space? If you assume that most of the first rounders will be kept then who gets the rest? Uncontracted players. Far as i see it, the ridiculously huge salary cap in the first year of the GC is intended to allow the club to offer massive, front-loaded contracts to current players in order to lure them to sign on. Was a rumour (dunno how true it was) that Naitanui was offered $2.5mill over 3 years - the extra salary cap room and the fact that the GC is going to have so many kids on the books mean that they can afford to do this kind of thing. Whether NN was a target or not, they can offer stupid amounts of $, most to be paid in the first year or two while the salary cap is still huge and the GC list is mostly filled with kids who don't demand as much money. GC will need to get some experienced players on board - I think this is the way that the AFL intend it to happen. |

Cheers for that Humble Minion. Much appreciated
That is a massive freaking amount of concessions. I can only imagine the 2nd sydney team will get even greater ones. the afl's 'secret formula' sounds worrying |

Most people are well aware that Gold Coast will recieve very good concessions but I'm very interested to see what the AFL gives West Sydney in what is arguably a much tougher market.
One major worry with these teams coming in is that our window is likely to open/be open when the Gold Coast start to peak and if they have a decent success rate with many of their early picks we could find ourselves having a very good team that simply can't beat an unbeatable team... -------------------- Will to win. Will to survive. Simply too great.

i remember reading somewhere that if a uncontracted players decides to leave the club, the club gets a pick on replacement, but the pick is determined by how old the player is, how well they performed in the year just passed and there was something else..

Narh. Our Window will really open in 2011 (2010 we have a good shot too, much like the Hawks last year to jag one), and prob go till say 2015. The GC and WS teams will take 2-3 years to become a real force, so we still have those 3 years as a window without them. They will be rising as we are falling just like the lions were in 2001. |

Lets give the GC the first 20 picks in the 2009 and 2010 Draft.
I would love EFC to play a team of 18 to 20 year olds. A certain win is in the offing. GC will be lucky to win 6 to games in their first 2 years. GC may take 3 or 4 years to have a decent team . |

Gold Coast's draft rules explained - Hope this helps.
1. 2009 NAB AFL Draft Gold Coast to have the capacity to sign 12 x 17 year-olds born in the January April window (January 1 to April 30, 1992). 2. 2010 NAB AFL Draft Gold Coast to have first pick in each round and Gold Coast to have selections 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 in round one 3. 2009 NAB Rookie Draft Gold Coast to have selections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 4. 2010 NAB Rookie Draft Gold Coast to alternate Queensland priority selections with Brisbane Lions. Gold Coast to have first selection 5. Zoned access Gold Coast to have zoned access to up to five Queensland players prior to each of 2010, 2011 and 2012 NAB AFL Drafts Gold Coast to have zoned access to up to three Northern Territory players prior to the 2010 NAB AFL Draft 6. 2010 Post-season, AFL listed player access Gold Coast to have capacity to pre-list 10 players who had previously nominated for the AFL Draft, or were previously listed with an AFL club. Gold Coast to have capacity to sign up to 16 uncontracted players Gold Coast would also have an expanded list size and TPP allowance in the clubs initial four years from 2011 to 2014, which would be as follows: 2011 48 senior list, nine rookies with $1m TPP extra allowance; 2012 46 senior list, nine rookies with $800k TPP extra allowance; 2013 42 senior list, nine rookies with $600k TPP extra allowance; 2014 40 senior list, nine rookies with $400k TPP extra allowance; 2015 38 senior list, nine rookies in line with other AFL clubs. As part of the entry rules for the Gold Coast side, the AFL Commission resolved that any club that lost a player to the expansion side would be eligible for a compensation pick (after the entry of both Gold Coast and the second club to be based in Sydney). Compensation picks will be tradeable and can be used by clubs at any time within five years. First round compensation picks cannot be used until the end of the first round in the 2010 and 2011 drafts. Clubs will be required to nominate the year in which they plan to use the compensation pick before the first round of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season in that particular year. The compensatory pick would be assessed around the players age (greater weighting for younger players), club contract ranking (greater weighting for club key players), onfield performance (greater weighting for strong club best and fairest performance) and draft position if less than four years experience. This ranking system will then determine if a club is eligible for a compensatory pick in one of five spots first-round pick, end-of-first-round pick, second-round pick, end-of-second-round pick or third-round pick. Under the model, the round-one, round-two or round-three picks would be taken immediately after the pick the club already has in that round in the draft that year. How the 2010 NAB AFL Draft would look under these concession rules (indicative draft order before trading) Round one 1 Gold Coast 2 Gold Coast 3 Gold Coast 4 Club 16 on 2010 ladder 5 Gold Coast 6 Club 15 on 2010 ladder 7 Gold Coast 8 Club 14 on 2010 ladder 9 Gold Coast 10 Club 13 on 2010 ladder 11 Gold Coast 12 Club 12 on 2010 ladder 13 Gold Coast 14 Club 11 on 2010 ladder 15 Gold Coast 16 Club 10 on 2010 ladder 17 Club 9 on 2010 ladder 18 Club 8 on 2010 ladder 19 Club 7 on 2010 ladder 20 Club 6 on 2010 ladder 21 Club 5 on 2010 ladder 22 Club 4 on 2010 ladder 23 Club 3 on 2010 ladder 24 Club 2 on 2010 ladder 25 Club 1 on 2010 ladder Round two 26 Gold Coast 27 Club 16 on 2010 ladder 28 Club 15 on 2010 ladder 29 Club 14 on 2010 ladder 30 Club 13 on 2010 ladder 31 Club 12 on 2010 ladder 32 Club 11 on 2010 ladder 33 Club 10 on 2010 ladder 34 Club 9 on 2010 ladder 35 Club 8 on 2010 ladder 36 Club 7 on 2010 ladder 37 Club 6 on 2010 ladder 38 Club 5 on 2010 ladder 39 Club 4 on 2010 ladder 40 Club 3 on 2010 ladder 41 Club 2 on 2010 ladder 42 Club 1 on 2010 ladder Round three 43 Gold Coast 44 Club 16 on 2010 ladder 45 Club 15 on 2010 ladder 46 Club 14 on 2010 ladder 47 Club 13 on 2010 ladder 48 Club 12 on 2010 ladder 49 Club 11 on 2010 ladder 50 Club 10 on 2010 ladder 51 Club 9 on 2010 ladder 52 Club 8 on 2010 ladder 53 Club 7 on 2010 ladder 54 Club 6 on 2010 ladder 55 Club 5 on 2010 ladder 56 Club 4 on 2010 ladder 57 Club 3 on 2010 ladder 58 Club 2 on 2010 ladder 59 Club 1 on 2010 ladder -------------------- |
